SOUTH AFRICA: where black and white melted into brown!
Those seven days spent in South Africa, I rarely heard the word "apartheid", unless I spoke it myself. The taxi driver, the society matron, the bookstore clerk, each resorted to euphemism when they spoke of the space between 'Now and Then': "…the ten years since democracy."

DESIGN IS EASY
People who are able to achieve a lot without compromising their vision. The late designer Tibor Kalman (of M&Co and Colors Magazine) was such a person. When I studied and worked in Milan, I was lucky to meet and get to know great masters of the New Italian Design: Ettore Sottsass, Alessandro Mendini, Andrea Branzi.

Between the covers with Chip Kidd.
While record sleeve designers occupy a lofty position in graphic
design's pantheon, their contemporaries in book publishing rarely
receive the celebrity treatment. While the former boast such
stars as Peter Saville, The Designers Republic and Stefan Sagmeister..

LABOUR OF LOVE
Issay Kitagawa has been in love with print for as long as he can remember. It helped, of course, that his father ran a printing company and that the family lived next door. As a five year-old, he would sneak into the factory and nag his father to run out some stickers for him. "I just found printing really magical," he says.

NOTES FROM THE FASHION INDABA
Twenty thousand jobs were lost in 2003, another estimated 16 000 more in 2004. South Africa's clothing and textile industry is in deep crisis. The strong Rand has made our exports less competitive, while cheap imports, especially from China, continue to flood the market locally.

A South Africa Identity
The morning session started with an alarmingly frank opener by sponsor, BarloWorld CEO Tony Phillips, who spoke about the crisis of leadership in the architectural profession, the lack of physical icons in South Africa, and that South Africa needs "simple, clever interventions that have a big effect on the national consciousness". Bravo to that.
