DRESSING THE OLYMPIC TEAM FOR SUCCESS
There's nothing strange about the step-out outfits that were worn by the South African Olympic team at this year's games - except maybe the name of the fusion fashion house that created them. The Strangelove duo of Carlo Gibson and Ziemek Pater and co-owners of the fashion label of the same name dressed the teamsters in African-inspired attire, as the winners of the NOCSA competition to dress the local Olympians launched at Design Indaba 7, in February 2004.

The brief was to create proudly South African garments showcasing the diversity and spirit of South Africa, keeping in mind the country's 10-year democracy, and a blending with Greek culture. Strangelove created round neck African-style shirts, coupled with a matching skirt for the women and drawstring pants for the men.

"The greatest accolade was that the panel of judges from sport had little or no professional knowledge of the clothing industry," said Ziemek Pater, one half of the twosome.

The garments are to be worn by athletes to the opening ceremony and official functions.

CHARITY BEGINS AT (WOOLIES) HOMEWARE
Design Indaba supporter, Woolworths, puts the home into homeware by teaming up with internationally acclaimed creative director, Sebastian Conran to create an original South African range, Conran Africa.

Woolworths worked with Conran and the country's top talent and crafters to create the line which offers about 80 products comprising just about anything for the home from cutlery to floor rugs with an authentic and local feel that is indicative of South Africa's creative heritage.

The relationship with Conran began at the 2003 Design Indaba, where Sir Terence Conran, Sebastian's father and founder of the Conran shops in London, New York, Paris and Tokyo met with the company.

"This isn't just about bringing out a beautiful, exclusive, quality design homeware range," says Richard Butt, Woolworths product director. "It's about being in touch with our customer's sense of social awareness. She buys knowing that she is making a difference to people's lives by directly contributing to a project that empowers mostly female crafters in South Africa."

Crafters who participated in designing and creating the range include Africa Nova, Carrol Boyes, Ngwenya Glass and Pret-a-Pot among others. The Conran Africa range will be available at selected Woolworths stores from October.
