Carrol Boyes transforms the mundane into the extraordinary. Pewter, stainless

where everyday objects are conduits for fluid female figures, mythical fish
and funky African pastiche. The collection can be found throughout Southern
Africa and in Dubai, London and New York.

of South African culture and can be recognized worldwide for their distinctive
vibrancy, passionate shapes and dynamic colour. Barbara's award-winning work

Monkey - our story
Ceramic artists Barbara Jackson and Shirley Fintz, collectors of African beadwork
and art, have facilitated a revival of an ancient African tradition in Southern
Africa. Together with Mataphelo Ngaka, they realised their dream of creating
employment and empowerment for disadvantaged women in Cape Town has led to the
creation of 'MONKEYBIZ'. The beadworks are creating a sensation wherever they
appear locally and abroad.

Philippa Green is a jeweller working with less traditional materials like plastic,

She is currently working on a new range using diamonds and resin.

After completing a degree in fine art, during which I ultimately explored sculptural
space using card off-cuts and masking tape, I applied the skills I acquired
making paper sculptures to more functional areas of design- primarily lighting
as well as interesting packaging design.
Since graduating, I have not stopped learning through experimentation - I have
been investigating glue less assembly mechanisms, designing custom lampshades,
producing a range of giftware and light coverings, and finding new, more robust
materials to work with, whilst learning about the processes of mass production.
(I make cool things.)

Silvio Rech has spent the last 10 years developing a 'haute-couture handcrafted'
body of work in Africa. The design philosophy has been to live on site in exotic
locations, doing one project at a time and developing a total design, creating
a new language of architecture and a life-style particular to each situation.
Most of the work has included an element of transfer of skill to the local communities
from a core team of builders gathered from all over Africa.
Recent works have included Makalali Game Lodge, Mpumalanga, 1996; Ngorongoro
Crater Lodge, Tanzania, 1997; Joa & Mombo Camps, Okavango Delta, Botswana,
1999, and the recently completed North Island in the Seychelles. All of these
boutique lodges deal very closely with eco-issues, and have placed themselves
firmly in the eco-tourism market.

EXPo FILM FEST
Curated by Encounters
Waiting for Valdez - 27 min
Dir: Dumisani Phakati
A look into a young boy's world, living with his granny in Eldorado Park, a
so-called coloured area as defined under the rule of Apartheid in South Africa.
Sharkey's life is driven by a burning ambition to see the latest movie coming
to town "Valdez is Coming", but money is scarce. Along with some friends
they pool together a few coins and two of them go off to see the movie, promising
Sharkey and the rest that they will relate the story. Late at night around a
fire the two kids tell the story of Valdez. Meanwhile Granny waits at home trying
to fend off the ravages of ill health and old age. She shares a very special
relationship with Sharkey, lovingly caring for her grandson, getting him to
school, tucking him into bed, knitting and watching over him while his parents
try to make a living on the other side of town. We have a glimpse into Sharkey's
neighbourhood characters, his friends and tormentors at school, his life with
his granny until she eventually succumbs to her illness and passes away.
Raya - 26 min
Dir: Zulfah Otto Sallies
Raya is a story of reconciliation across three generations of women. The film
also examines the relationship between Cape Town's pious, respectable Muslim
community, and its flip-side, a darker world of repression and gangsterism -
a relationship often hidden behind a veil of silence.
The Black - 45min
Dir: Eddie Edwards
A whacky take on the geography of Apartheid in Cape Town. Using the Black River
as both metaphor and embodiment of separation and displacement, Edwards constructs
poetic tableaux of water and sound to convey how the city's musical traditions,
often markers of ethnic identity, reinforce the ghettoisation of culture or
serve to bring people together. Includes interviews, backstage banter and live
concert footage of musicians ranging from kwaito stars and Brenda Fassie to
right-wing Christian punk rockers. A beautifully shot, intelligent and compelling
visual essay exploring the crosscurrents of history, culture and religion that
gave rise to this fabulous city.
Husk - 11min
Dir : Jerry Handler
Set in a remote and desolate South African location, Husk tells the story of
Lucy (Nicola Hanekom), a virtual prisoner to her drunken and useless father
(Marcel van Heerden). Mounting debt threatens to leave them homeless until desperation
drives them to plot the demise of the debt collector (Gerard Rudolf). Unexpected
violence erupts and the situation gets out of hand - resulting in Lucy exacting
a chilling revenge.
The Foreigner - 17min
Dir: Zola Maseko
'The Foreigner' is a 17-minute film about the relationship between an immigrant
street vendor and a homeless child and is a chilling and gripping indictment
of xenophobia. The story traces the relationship between the foreigner, Koffi
(played by Ivorian musician Koffi Kouakou Gervais), and the little boy, Vusi
(played by newcomer Bafana Matuta), that develops and grows despite the hostility
and aggression directed at the foreigner amid the hustle and bustle of street
trade.
Shot on location in Hillbrow, in the heart of a city deserted by white capital,
and perceived to be the Sodom and Gamorrah of the new South Africa, the film
deals with both the humanity of friendship, and the brutality of xenophobic
hatred. With attacks on black foreigners have become increasingly deadly and
brutal, xenophobia has moved into the media spotlight.
1st Prize in the Short Film Competition, Urban World Film Festival, New York.
2nd Prize, Milano African Film Festival.
Casa De La Musica - 52min
Dir: Jonathan de Vries
Capetonian jazz-musician, Robbie Jansen and historian Vincent Kolbe, travel
to Cuba to explore the correlation of musical influences and styles between
these two port cities that appear a world apart, and yet are similar in so many
ways. In what is a whistle-stop tour, we meet and hear Jansen jam with the personalities
and characters of Cuban music. We are introduced to the historical variety of
influences - jazz, salsa, rap, and African syncopation - that pulsates through
Cubans, even from a very young age. The vibrant beat that pervades the film
and their travels makes the pair wonder what Cape Town and its music could have
achieved had it had a different history.
The Portrait of a Young Man Drowning - 11min
Dir: Teboho Mahlatsi
The film explores the quest for redemption of a young man who has defended his
community to the point of spilling blood. The peace that he fought for now evades
him. Winner of the Silver Lion, Venice festival. Reel Black Award, Toronto International
Film Festival.
The Great Dance - 78min
Dir : Craig and Damon Foster
The !Xo San of the central Kalahari have been a part of this vast desert landscape
since ancient times. !Nqate is one of them. With his friends Karoha and Xlhoase,
they hunt as their ancestors did. "We are San bushmen, sons and daughters
of the first people," he explains. "We know hunting. This is what
we were born to do."
Through their eyes we perceive a world invisible to outsiders. The subtlest
signs are imperceptible to the untrained eye, but they are enough to lead !Nqate
to his prey. Tracks in the sand are only the beginning - the skills of the San
hunter are virtually a sixth sense, a complex bond between man and animal.
The ultimate expression of this relationship is the "chasing hunt"
- a run to the death. This incredible feat of skill, tenacity and endurance
is rarely practiced and has never before been filmed. We join Karoha as he alone
runs down his prey, tracking at high speed over difficult terrain and in 46ºC
(120ºF) heat, until man or animal must collapse from sheer exhaustion.
Innovative mini-cam techniques, where cameras are mounted on animals, were specially
developed for the film, giving the viewer unique points-of-view of both the
hunter and the hunted in an effort to understand their ancient relationship.
A drink in The Passage
- 29 min
Dir : Zola Maseko
A tale of a black sculptor who during the apartheid years entered a whites only
competition and won.
Soldiers of the Rock - 98 min
Dir: Norman Maake
Soldier of the Rock is a student tour de force. In honest terms, it realistically
portrays life in South Africa's mines, recalling countless films where the human
spirit triumphs over physical exhaustion, personal danger, and oppressive, claustrophobic
environments.
The protagonist, Vuyo, becomes a miner to understand his father who died as
one. He is placed with the toughest of that breed: the deep - level miners.
The tight-knit disillusioned crew splits into two camps when economic events
work against them. Inspired, half pool together to own their mine, the other
half are paralysed by fear of change.
Under the Rainbow - 18min
Dir : Dean Blumberg
Under the Rainbow is a poetic recreation of actual events, which took place
in the inner city of Johannesburg. The story telescopically tracks two young
men on their nightly prowl. As their actions induce a spiraling succession of
events, which lead to severe consequences, the film tenders the dreams of a
dismembered sector of the population and their inevitable search for a better
life
Inja - 17min
Dir: Steve Pasvolsky
Inja is a poetic and simply told story about the relationship between a boy
and his dog. It unfolds on a farm in South Africa during Apartheid, where a
young Xhosa boy befreinds a dog and assumes the role of his loving master. However,
their bond is broken by the intervention of a white farmer who makes the young
boy partake in teaching the dog a cruel lesson. The story then moves forward
in time, where in a turn of events the framer's lesson leads to his demise.
Ochre and Water - 53min
Dirs: Craig Matthew and Joëlle Chesselet
David and Goliath - a theme, which, in the face of globalisation, takes on new
meaning. This time, Goliath is confronted by the Himba people of North Western
Namibia's cultural identity: threatened by a hydro-electric dam development
that would destroy the very basis of their unique and thriving pastoral nomadic
culture, the Himba could lose their pasture along the banks of the Cunene River
and hundreds of ancestral graves - crucial to their way of life. Surprisingly,
their oral tradition of discussion helps their fight for survival. Doxa Productions
had the privilege to document this development saga over seven years. Intimate
contact with and acceptance by the Himba people gave director/cameraman Craig
Matthew the opportunity to reveal the complex web of relationships that define
the Himba herders' culture within a global context, in a lyrical yet simple
way. Editing and sound design by Ronelle Loots, and a soundtrack by the Kalahari
Surfers, combining Himba elements and studio treatment, contribute to the film's
compelling impact.
Amandla! A Revolution in Four Part Harmony - 110 min
Dir: Lee Hirsch
A celebration of music in the struggle, Amandla! looks at how changes in the
lyrics, rhythms and melodies of liberation songs reflected the radicalisation
of black resistance in response to ever harsher crackdowns by the Apartheid
state. In the context of the defiance campaign era of the 1950s, jaunty ditties
warned "watch out Verwoerd, the black man will get you"; the Sharpeville
massacre prompted a series of dirges, and the 1976 riots saw the emergence of
songs expressing youthful dynamism, anger and disaffection. Revealing interviews
with SA music greats - Dolly Rathebe, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela and Sibongile
Khumalo - interspersed with disturbing footage of key events make for a compelling
and novel retelling of this significant chapter of our past.
Karoo Kitaar Blues - 92min
Dir: Liza Key
In the style of The Buena Vista Social Club, South African music icon David
Kramer seeks out the last remaining players of a fast disappearing, distinctively
South African phenomena - the Karoo Kitaar Blues.
Like the lyrics to their liedjies, this road-documentary records the isolated
social conditions and arid desert landscape of the Great Karoo's talented inhabitants.
It introduces us to each colourful personality, and to their homemade instruments,
engaging techniques, and families and friends, before they travel with Kramer
to record and perform in the unknown world of Cape Town. Focused on personalities
that are destined to perform, this search for the Karoo's hidden artists is
a delightful insight into a rarely viewed communal and visual landscape.
Shooting Bokkie - 74min
Dir: Rob de Mezieres
This quick paced, non-stop, exhilarating rollercoaster ride flicks between the
machinations of the film world and the gritty underground of Cape Town's Cape
Flats. The filmmaker's vision: to find and follow a "Bokkie" (child
assassin or "courier"). He has to convince the crew, the financiers,
the lawyer, the gangs, the Bokkie, and the audience, that what he is doing is
not a "snuff" movie. The gangs are there, the "Bokkies"
exist
but nobody wants to watch a real "hit", or do they? An
utterly shocking, spellbinding Pandora's box served with a twist.
Steps For the Future Films
A unique collection of films from seven countries in Southern Africa. Positive,
provocative, humorous and brave, these unusual stories show how individuals
are living their lives and how societies are having to change under the impact
of HIV/AIDS.
The Steps for the Future video collection has emerged through a collaboration
between Southern African and international filmmakers, broadcasters, AIDS organisations
and people living with HIV/AIDS who have united to produce high-quality, professional
films. These compelling stories reveal the effect of the HIV/AIDS pandemic on
the lives of individuals, families, communities and nations.
The films form part of a media-advocacy campaign, which is intended to promote
debate and discussion around HIV/AIDS, related topics such as disclosure, discrimination,
treatment and living positively. Diverse perspectives are presented through
the eyes of a range of people and communities.
These unconventional stories celebrate the strength of the people who share
and reflect on their experiences of HIV/AIDS. Steps for the Future not only
challenges fear and stigmatisation with stories of hope, but also dismantles
discrimination and ignorance by cultivating tolerance and promoting the belief
that actually, life is a beautiful thing.
This collection includes narrative documentaries, music videos, experimental
films, short films, investigative stories and even sexy public service announcements.
All these films were made with the support of the most experienced producers
from the region, with professional guidance from some of the best documentary
filmmakers and commissioning editors in the world.
The films, selected from more than 200 proposals, were ready for delivery in
October 2001 and were broadcast around World AIDS Day, 1 December 2001. In our
collection, there are several 52-minute documentaries, some made by award-winning
directors like Brian Tilley and Licinio Azevedo, others by the new generation
of young Southern African filmmakers such as Dumisani Phakathi, Khalo Matabane,
Beverley Ditsie and Cecil Moller.
Among the professional supporters who worked over periods of one to five weeks
with the filmmakers are Jennifer Fox, Nina Kellgren, Jakob Høgel, Nick
Fraser, Erez Laufer, Christoph Jörg, Mette Hoffman-Meyer, Iikka Vehkalahti,
Diane Weyermann, Niels Pagh Anderson, and Jacob Thuesen.
Ikon - Rainbow Circle Films Short films
NY1 3min
Dir: Ntombi Mzamane
Touting taxis and flashy cars, herds of cattle and donkey carts - cold men on
canes, young hipsters flaunting their threads: this is the heart of cool. NY1,
it's where the heat is on. Residents share their thoughts and feelings on Guguletu's
busiest street, Native Yard 1, on the eve of its name change.
Grumpies - 11min
Dir: John Fredericks
Some call him a beggar, a liar, a drifter or a thief - a no-good smokkelhuis
layabout. But to those who really know him, Grumpies is the ex-Rockets singer
who toured with Jonathan Butler in the '70s, fell ill, then disappeared into
oblivion on the eve of a US tour. This is the story of a man who still raises
his voice above the sound of gunfire and finally gets the chance to live his
dream again.
Zion Youth Crew - 10min
Dir: Vaughan Giose
An inspiring record of the spiritual, musical and personal journey of two Ragga-muffin
singers. Yellow studies journalism, Dan photography, and between classes they
hang together or with their Rasta brethren while pumping out angry sounds to
put Babylon on fire.
Gemaakte Hare - 7min
Dir: Brenda Davis
For Lameez Peters, growing up half Muslim and half Christian meant having to
conform to prescriptive religious norms of appearance and behaviour. Her commitment
to her dreadlocks becomes a warrior's weapon in a society obsessed with pigeonholing
racial and cultural identity.
Deafening Echoes - 18min
Dir: Eugene Paramoer
Anton Franch's last stand was one of the most heroic moments in the struggle
against Apartheid. On
17 November 1989, armed with grenades and an AK-47, he kept the security forces
besieging his house at bay for seven hours before blowing himself up. A dramatic
reconstruction of the events of that day and a moving portrait of the people
of Bonteheuwel still struggling to come to terms with the loss of an idol and
friend.
