Fabio Ongarato
A confab with Fab Fabio
The Melbourne-based designer impressed many with his frank and honest talk, one that hinted at the more than fleeting similarities between design in Australia and South Africa. Sean O'Toole chatted to Fabio Ongarato about Australia's post-colonial design legacy, and its tendency to mix ideas and use imported design traditions.

Stefan Giovannoni
The democratic designer
"I don't like to talk about my objects as toys," Stefano Giovannoni once commented, reaffirming it again while presenting his work at Design Indaba 6. Rather, the influential Italian product designer prefers to describe his range of household designs as "communication projects"...

David Doubilet
His first adventures beneath the ocean took place, not in some tropical paradise but in the dark and murky waters off the coast of New Jersey where his family had a summer home and where he now lives. Nevertheless, Doubilet saw enough to captivate him and lead to a career that now sees him firmly established as one of the world's top underwater photographers...

Sujata Keshavan
Sujata Keshavan's career has been one of firsts. She was the first Indian to obtain a post graduate degree in graphic design - from Yale, no less - and, after graduating, she founded the first graphic design consultancy in India. But she was almost lost to advertising. After studying at Ahmedabad's National Institute of Design...

Irma Boom
Boom or bust!
Watching Dutch book designer Irma Boom guide the Design Indaba 6 audience through her impressive body of work, there was a palpable sense of awe. Idiosyncratic, wilful, conceptual and challenging; her work explores the creative boundaries of print - and the imagination.

A Life in Design:
Sir Terence Conran
To hear Sir Terence Conran talk of his professional career is very much to hear the history of British design in the latter half of the twentieth century. And that's not overstating it either. A practicing artisan during the formative years of the UK's post-war reconstruction, Sir Terence's personal biography is one of a long, if not supremely patient, walk to the top.

Javier Mariscal
You cannot escape Javier Mariscal's children. He talks about them all the time.
"Alma, she is a private, loving little girl, always wanting to be close. So sweet. She represents the soul in people," he says of one of his fifteen-month-old twins. Her brother Linus, by contrast, comes across as a challenging tearaway.

1000 words to say I love you
A non-writer designer sort of oke's personal tribute to a few friends from Design Indaba 6 by Garth Walker
Something I have noticed in almost 30 years as a designer - the truly talented are always the nicest. Perhaps it's because they know just how hard this all is.
